If a brokerage firm goes bankrupt can you lose your money that is in securities? So say you have more money in securities than the SIPC will cover, you still shouldn't lose that money should you? Because each security is a partial ownership in a company that is not affiliated with the brokerage firm that just went bankrupt. You just use that brokerage firm to buy the security for you. I'm just kind of confused by this, so any help would be appreciated.

How can you blame mortgage backed securities and wall street as a bigger culprit than Freddie and Fannie? Had Fannie and Freddie not been mandated by our government to write sub-prime and risky loans, those securities being traded and sold would have held their value. In addition, how could these companies not see that the real estate they were writing loans for was way overvalued yet they continued to write "zero down", " no credit, bad credit, no problem" loans? Please explain how Wall Street is more to blame than Freddie and Fannie. I'm willing to learn.

Should the Securities and Exchange Commission do something about this? Many high-technology companies, like Nortel Networks, Micron Technology and JDS Uniphase, have written down massive amounts of their inventory. For example, Nortel Networks revalued some of its inventory parts at $0, though the inventory initially cost Nortel $650 million. Companies are required to report whether they write off the cost value (or book value) or their inventory even if they do not dispose of the inventory. Later on, they may sell this inventory but are not required to report the sale for cash of previously "worthless" inventory. The effect may be that in future years, when the inventory is sold, profits are overstated. Also in the article, JDS Uniphase said it will write off $250 million of its inventory but promised to disclose any future sale. On the other hand, Micron Technology, which wrote down $260 million, won't disclose any future sale. Should the Securities and Exchange Commission do anything?
